‘Worst case of neglect he has ever seen’, woman, 85, covered in bugs, urine and feces, police say – FOX13 Memphis

Memphis, Tenn. A daughter faces two felony charges after her mom was found in deplorable reported living conditions.

According to Memphis Police, officers responded to a call at a house on Duke St. and saw an 85-year-old woman being loaded up into an ambulance by members of the Memphis Fire Department who were wearing hazmat suits.

Police said that 85-year-old Betty Harber was covered in bed bugs, urine and feces and was found sleeping on soiled sheets on a mattress on the floor of the house.

MFD found more soiled sheets and blankets inside the house, a house covered in trash and in overall poor condition, according to police.

The smell coming from the house was so strong that it reportedly kept uniformed Memphis Police officers from entering.

A lieutenant with the Memphis Fire Department said, it was the worst case of neglect he has ever seen, according to a police affidavit.

Police said that 57-year-old June Harber soon arrived at the home and told police that she was the primary caretaker for her mother Betty Harber.

Once she arrived at St. Francis hospital, Betty Harber was diagnosed with having pneumonia, dementia with delirium and pressure ulcers while suffering from malnutrition, according to police.

June Harber was arrested and charged with aggravated neglect of an elderly 70+ or vulnerable adult and one count of aggravated abuse of an elderly 70+ or vulnerable adult.

Old furniture, and trash everywhere.

This is what Angie Gilmore sees when she looks across the street.

Its just a complete eyesore, Gilmore said. Im embarrassed to have them across the street.

What was found inside this house on Duke Street is even more alarming.

Unthinkable, she said. Unthinkable. I cant see anybody allowing that to happen to their parents.

Police say Harber was taken to St. Francis, where she was diagnosed with pneumonia, malnutrition, dementia, and pressure ulcers.

Gilmore said the house has been this way for at least three years.

Theyll move it around whenever they get summoned, I guess or whatever from code enforcement, she said. Theyll move. Theyll put it back up in the carport and cover it up for a little while but then it comes right back out. Its just awful.
